Design Insider: What Colors Should You Use For Aging Eyes?

With over 100 years of combined experience designing for seniors, our in-house Design team knows a thing or two about planning a beautiful, functional living space. Today they’re sharing tips on how to pick the best color scheme suited for the space you’re working with.

Pick a common color scheme and stick with it
Using a color scheme throughout a space will make it flow and feel larger. Start by choosing a main color and one to two accent colors for small spaces, such as a senior living suite or apartment. This will create visual interest in the rooms, but yet won’t be overwhelming to the eye. Also consider variations of the same color in light and dark shades to create the interest in a more subtle way.

Add a pop of color, without regretting it
Consider using the more colorful items in things like artwork, bedding and accessories. You can very easily add a pop of color for impact by adding a colorful vase, coordinating throws in the same color and hanging a new piece of wall art that is complimentary. All of these items can be easily put away or swapped out with alternative colors based on the season or your mood.

Avoid using predominately cool colors
Vision yellows with age. Older eyes are less able to distinguish the difference between blues and greens. Avoid using a color palette that is predominately blue, green or another “cool” color. Warm colors like red and yellow are best!
